Baptism is the first sacrament of the Christian church. As a sacrament, it is a visible sign of God's invisible grace. Water is used as the visible sign because of it association with birth and with washing. In baptism we are born in God's family and our sins are washed away. This happens invisibly. We cannot see or prove that God is doing anything, which is why baptism require faith. In short, we become Christians when we are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Baptism is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, the Day of Pentecost, All Saints' Day or the Sunday after All Saint' Day, the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, or when a bishop is present. For pastoral reasons, baptism may also be offered on the Transfiguration of the Lord and Holy Cross Sunday or the Sundays immediately after them.

Marriage is a sacrament - a visible sign of spiritual grace. Marriage is one of seven sacraments (the others being Baptism, confirmation, Holy Communion, Penance, the anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders). Ironically, while our culture has become skeptical and forgetful of these other sacraments, it celebrates marriage with increasing ostentation and expense. But this is backwards from a Christian perspective because the sacraments of priority - that is, the two sacraments instituted by Christ for our salvation - are baptism and communion.
Still, just as baptism and communion are the sacraments of new life in Christ, so marriage is the sacrament of new Christian family and therefore deserves a joyful celebration. Sunday May 24, 3:00 p.m. Confirmation Service at the Cathedral. Confirmation is an opportunity to make a mature profession of Christian faith, having engaged in a serious study of its teachings. If you are 12 years of age or older and interested in being confirmed, please speak with Fr. Kevin as soon as possible so that confirmation classes can be arranged.
