The Meaning of Baptism
Baptism is the first sacrament of the Christian Church. As a sacrament, it is a visible sign of God's invisible grace. Water is used as the visible sign because of its association with birth and with washing. In baptism we are born into God's family and our sins are washed away. This happens invisibly. We cannot see or prove that God is doing anything, which is why baptism requires faith. In short, we become Christians when we are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
